Baking while recovering…. September 26, 2013

Filed under: Cakes — Kristin Barrios @ 1:43 PM

My summer was spent pretty much recovering from the aforementioned broken ankle. Which was pretty unfortunate for me, my husband, my kids, my dog (not my cat, she was thrilled to have a lap to sleep on all day!), and some baking.

I was scheduled to do a wedding cake one week after my ankle surgery for a friend’s wedding. With the help of my family and husband, who helped put pans and pull pans out of the oven, and get me situated at a table to decorate, the cake got finished. And while I stood with crutches under my arms and on one leg, I had to direct my husband on how to set his first tiered cake! He did well, my grasshopper. Only one small frosting issue that was fixed and no one knew the better! Here’s that finished cake….

After the wedding cake, I decided (well, sorta promised…lol) that I wouldn’t take on any more cakes while I couldn’t do them on my own. Which was a good decision, since the one above tuckered me out for a few days, but it was worth it!! 🙂 I did break that promise just once, but it was for my niece, and she’s cute, and had a birthday……here is her Belle cake…

Fishy Fishy….Birthday Cake and Cookies April 11, 2013

Filed under: Cakes — Kristin Barrios @ 8:03 AM

I recently made a birthday cake for a repeat customer 🙂 And the theme for this birthday party was goldfish! This was such a fun cake to make…..aside from the fact that my kids kept singing the McDonald’s Fish McBites commercial every time they came to check on the progress. You know the one….you probably just sang it!! Lol. “Fishy Fishy”

So this order was for the cake and cookies to match. I found and bought this really cute fish cookie cutter and I was able to frost them like goldfish…(insert another round of “Fishy Fishy” from my kids)…..

For the cake, the client had some ideas and I went with them and created this cake with matching goldfish!

“Fishy Fishy!”

This was a fun cake and cookies to make…even if I knew the McDonald’s Fish McBites jingle by heart afterwards, lol!

Baby Boike Gender Reveal Cake March 22, 2013

Filed under: Cakes — Kristin Barrios @ 4:03 PM

This was a very fun cake to make! The idea behind the cake is that the couple doesn’t know what they are having, and neither do their friends and family…..thus why a party and a cake!! For the Boike’s cake, they gave their gender ultrasound info. to a trusted friend, and she told me what color to make the cake. Pink for a girl, blue for a boy. So when the couple goes to cut into the cake, they reveal what the sex of the baby will be! How fun is that?! The Boike’s are having a baby boy and below is the cake I made for them. The buttons, bibs, onesies, and other items on the cake are made out of some fondant I made and cut and shaped into those pieces. This is one of my favorite cakes I’ve made! Thank you so much for letting me be a part of your special reveal!

Summer Catch-Up September 12, 2012

Time is a flyin’! I can not believe that we are almost half way thru September already! It is true what they say, time goes by so quickly…seems to go by even faster now that I’m older :o(  So quickly in fact that I have forgotten to post some projects from the Summer! So here goes…

Where I work we had a team for Relay for Life this year. And through out the year, we’ve been asked to help raise money for the Relay. One of those fundraisers was a silent auction. I whipped up this really neat Cancer Ribbon Scarf. I made it a lilac color so that it incompasses all forms of cancer.

I also made the following two cakes for some very special reasons. The first one is a cake I made for an Aunt and Uncle on Rey’s side that have a Dentistry in Adrian. They moved back up here several years ago from Texas, and opened a practice here. This cake was requested by their employees to celebrate the business’ success.

And for that same Aunt, I made a surprise party birthday cake a few weeks later! She was so surprised! Way to go Tio Joe and family in making it a successful surprise. And I think the cake turned out really nice, but I’m biased, lol…and she likes the tropical, beachy kinds of things ;o)

I love these kinds of cakes….it lets me be an artist with frosting, and “paint” on the cake.

I have a couple other really fun projects from this summer, and I will post them soon here and on Facebook! So check it out!
