First Time Fondant Adventure November 11, 2011

Yep…I did it. I took the step and made Fondant for the first time. Instead of buying fondant to play with the first time, I had the crazy idea to make my own. Out of marshmellows. And powdered sugar…..what a mess! (lol) But once I got the hang of it, it wasn’t actually too bad. And it didn’t taste horrible either! My kids loved it, talk about a sugar high! This cake in and of itself was an adventure, because not only was it the first time I had done fondant, it was also for the Saturday after Rey had surgery…in fact this cake was created while he was still in the hospital! Needless to say, this cake was finished in the wee hours of the morning on Saturday….and inbetween Rey being discharged, a flag football game for the littlest one, this cake was delivered to a friend of ours for their wedding reception!

So, this cake was sort of an experiment, and our friend was cool enough to let me use fondant on it ;o) …for the first time. She’s brave isn’t she? lol. They were married at Walt Disney World in Florida, and had a very magical wedding, and this gathering was for family and friends to celebrate their new union. And the cake was definately Mickey inspired!

On with the photos…I’m making fondant…which is very messy…but a fun messy ;o)

I learned the value of “liberally” putting powdered sugar on my hands before kneading the mixture together completely, but only AFTER the first batch ended up pretty  much all over my hands, making my fingers stick together….

And I also learned that old habits die hard….for all my fellow pottery people….doesn’t my fondant look like it’s ready to be thrown on a wheel and go?!?!? 😀  I found myself kneading it like I would a piece of clay, in total spiral fashion!

Told you it was messy….. 🙂

So, here’s the cakes with the fondant on it, ready to go be put together at delivery.

And here’s the finished cake at the reception…

Well, there it is! Pretty good for my first time, huh?!?! …lol. I hope they enjoyed the cake!
